Women in Ancient Egypt

Women's right, family life, work, and powerful women.

Daily life, family, and enterprise

Most women in Ancient Egypt took responsibility for the daily rhythm of home life, managing domestic duties, preparing food, crafting textiles, and raising children. Yet their influence extended beyond the household walls. Depending on their social standing, Egyptian women possessed legal independence: they could own property, initiate legal proceedings, and buy or sell goods. Many cultivated specialized skills to serve as musicians, dancers, weavers, servants, and esteemed priestesses within temple cults.

Marriage was an important part of Egyptian society. Women could keep control of their personal belongings after marriage. They could also divorce their husbands and had legal rights concerning property.

However, men generally held more positions of political authority, and women’s experiences were not equal across all social classes

Monarchs and political authority

While male rulers dominated Egypt's dynastic records, extraordinary women redefined imperial authority.

One of the most famous women in Egyptian history was Hatshepsut, who became pharaoh during the 18th Dynasty. She ruled for approximately 20 years and supported important building projects and trade expeditions.

Another important woman was Cleopatra VII, the last active ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt. She was known for her political leadership and her efforts to protect Egypt’s independence.

These women showed that female leadership was possible in Ancient Egypt, even though most rulers were men.
